Is somebody running out the clock to August 3? There is no evidence that McConnell is dead or that a vacancy is being concealed. There is, however, an office offering statements and one still photo where a ten-second dated video would answer the basic question. At some point, “trust the staff” starts looking less like medical privacy and more like a reboot nobody asked for.

THE ACTUAL AUGUST 3 QUESTION

Reporting says a vacancy before August 3 could produce a quick, separate special election. On or after that date, officials have argued the vote could run alongside the November election—or the seat could remain empty until January. The 2024 law is untested and does not specify when the governor must schedule the vote.

SO: POTENTIAL CLOCK-RUNNING? FAIR QUESTION. SECRET DEMOCRATIC APPOINTMENT? WRONG PLOT.

IF AN ACTUAL VACANCY EXISTS, KRS 118.720 SAYS THE GOVERNOR SHALL SIGN A SPECIAL-ELECTION PROCLAMATION, BUT THE LAW DOES NOT SET THE ELECTION DATE.
